....Or don't, she's really not that much older, even her complete mystery over modern day tech makes her seem that way. The shift in terminology had definitely thrown her for a loop upon arrival, but she hadn't placed much stock in it due to the varied differences in recruits at the time - and the false belief that she'd be allowed a return trip hope after the Chantes mission.
But here they are now on mission number 2 of what seems to be many, and she's beginning to rethink her earlier decision of throwing aside references she doesn't fully understand.]
I was curious and you seemed like someone who might know. [Because of Siri and all that.] It would be prudent for me to learn about these types of things, in case we ever visit a world with the level of technology you're used to.
[ Look she's not an elder if he'd still consider dating her! ]
I can tell you I'm not the most up-to-date person here but she's a major outlier afaik. I guess it's a lot easier to work backwards from the technology you know... I could definitely help you out if you want?
[ She wants. And hey, it'd be a good bridge-rebuilding exercise! ]
let's find a starting point first, do you know what the Internet is?
[CUT HER SOME SLACK SHE'S FROM LIKE...HIS GREAT-GRANDMOTHER'S TIME. Also what the fuck is 'phishing', is his spelling just that atrocious?
It's a good thing she doesn't embarrass too easily, otherwise she'd be flushing bright red at her complete ignorance in this area. As it is, she is frowning pretty deeply at the ground right now, this assault of new terminology slowly chipping away at her endurance.]
We have telephones, yes, but no cellphones. We also have radios that we often use to broadcast important news and announcements over.
[But none of that AM/FM shit y'all youngsters have.]
[ HE'S NOT EXASPERATED HE'S ENDEARED. Endeared. Also shut up things get trendy in the space future. Spelling and grammar got sacrificed. ]
[ Anyway here's your protagonist infodump. ]
Okay cool! Because any further and we'd be getting out of my area tbh... we can tie this all together actually. Cellphones are telephones without cords. instead of wires they send information thru waves, sort of like a radio. they're little 1-on-1 radios.
The Internet is a step up from that. I'm p sure it used to go thru phone wires but it graduated to waves too... anyway it's kinda similar to the jewelry here, you can send text/audio/video files through it. pictures. music. news. games. money... but it's not accessed by thought it's accessed through a computer. which is like... a screen and a keyboard and—it's really hard to explain without one in front of me but if someone mentions a computer, it's a machine that sends information. or stupid cat videos. it's multipurrpose
(and ftr 'phishing' is stealing someone else's information via the internet. by putting out something for people to use/reply to that looks credible, like bait on a line. So you weren't totally off base after all!)
I think after that pretty much all new technology and terms you'd probably hear around here stem from computers and/or the net unless you wanna start talking engineering or other sciences, so idek where to start...
Do you have any other words floating around in your head without definitions?
Sorry, explaining things like that from scratch is kinda difficult... [ Especially in thought form, the jewelry has always been a little erratic for him from the get-go. ] but if one ever comes up I'll be sure to show you!
you can just use me like a dictionary for little things how's that
[Sigma tried so hard and got so far, and in the end it didn't even matter......
But she gives him bonus points for effort, mustering up a weak smile, even if he can't quite see it over the network.]
That's alright. Learning most things takes practice. I suppose I should start with a dictionary to keep all of this in. I wouldn't want to bother you all the time with questions.
Asking questions is just as much practice as looking it up yourself. And I'm way faster than flipping through books. it's no bother at all!! hell it's the least I could do...
[ He's a lonely approval-seeker at heart, Riza... ]
[ Spelled out and everything. Not to suggest she isn't a resilient woman and that they hadn't reached some kind of understanding, it's just... a nice thing to hear. Yes or no is fine. ]
[The concern over her well-being catches her by surprise, but in a good way. She's more often been the protector rather than the protected so the slight shift in perspective comes welcome.]
As good as I've always been. I could use a day or two off but hard work isn't anything I'm not used to.
[ Protectors gotta protect. Even if it's other protectors. Especially if it's other protectors, honestly, they definitely have a nasty habit of pushing themselves too hard. ]
That's good. I think after all that we deserve a little time off. Don't work through your lunch break or anything okay?

I don't suppose it's something used for fishing?
[Nailed it.]

[ Sorry he's actually laughing. Good thing this isn't audio. And the jewelry isn't transcribing his merriment. ]
No but it can be used for phishing!
...... I'll come back to it. how about a cellphone? or a phone in general. telephone.

Then I'll let you know the next time I come across something unfamiliar. But you might have to explain it to me in person.
[In person explanations and demonstrations are so much easier.]
